Types of Hindu Temples You’ll Find in the United States

From large South Indian temples to neighborhood mandirs, ISKCON centers and Swaminarayan temples, here is how to tell US temples apart.

The United States is home to well over a thousand Hindu temples and centers, and they vary a great deal. Some are vast stone complexes built over many years; others are a converted house or a room in a community center. Knowing the main types helps you choose where to go and what to expect.

South Indian (Agamic) temples

Many large US temples follow South Indian traditions, with architecture inspired by the temples of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. Look for a tall tower (gopuram) over the entrance and separate shrines for deities such as Venkateswara (Balaji), Shiva, Murugan, Ganesha and the Goddess. Rituals follow detailed scriptural rules, priests are often trained in India, and services such as archana and abhishekam are performed throughout the day.

North Indian mandirs

North Indian style mandirs usually bring several deities together in one main hall, often including Rama, Sita, Krishna, Radha, Hanuman, Durga and Shiva. Worship is centered on aarti, bhajans and community gatherings. Many of these temples serve as community hubs, hosting language classes, cultural programs and festivals.

Combined or "all deities" temples

In many US cities, especially smaller ones, a single temple serves Hindus from many regions. These temples often combine North and South Indian traditions under one roof and adjust their schedules to suit the community. Names such as "Hindu Temple of [city]" or "All Gods Temple" are common.

ISKCON temples

Temples of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) are dedicated to Krishna and are known for their kirtan (chanting), Sunday feasts and outreach programs. Many welcome visitors with no Indian background and offer introductory talks in English.

Swaminarayan temples

Swaminarayan temples, including those of BAPS and other organizations, are known for their detailed carved architecture, strict discipline and active youth programs. Some of the most elaborate temples in North America belong to this tradition. Dress codes can be stricter here, so check before you visit.

Sai Baba centers and temples

Temples and centers dedicated to Shirdi Sai Baba hold aarti several times a day and are often open to people of all faiths. You will find them in many US metro areas.

Regional and community temples

Some temples serve a particular regional community, such as Gujarati, Bengali, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Nepali, Guyanese or Trinidadian Hindus. They may follow regional festivals and languages closely, but they almost always welcome visitors.

Ashrams and spiritual centers

Temple Navigator also lists some ashrams, meditation centers and spiritual organizations where Hindu practice is taught or shared. These may keep different hours, focus on classes and retreats, or ask you to register in advance.

How to choose

  • For a first visit, a larger temple with regular hours and a front office is often easiest.
  • For festivals, community temples often have the warmest atmosphere.
  • For architecture, look for the large South Indian or Swaminarayan temples in major metro areas.

Use the Find Temples page to search by city, state or ZIP code, and check each listing's hours and contact details before you go.
